HIRING
How do I obtain a Work-Study student(s) for my department?
You need to fill out this application and send it to studentemployment@wlu.edu.
Can a student have more than one Work-Study position?
No, however you can hire a student using your department funds if they already have a Work-Study position. Please contact Miranda Edwards at studentemployment@wlu.edu for questions about hiring into a department funded position.
How many Work-Study students can I have?
You may have as many Work-Study students as you want. However, they must be eligible for the Work-Study program.
How do I advertise for my position?
All open Work-Study positions are posted on the Financial Aid portal where students apply. If you want more advertisement for your position, you may send a flyer (PDF) to studentemployment@wlu.edu to be distributed to students. Only eligible Work-Study students will see advertisements and be able to apply.
PAYROLL
What happens if I don't approve student time?
You will have to wait until payroll system opens back up to approve the time and the student will be paid on the next pay cycle.
How often do I approve student time?
You need to approve your students' time biweekly.
What are the payrates for Work-Study Students?
Pay rates for Work-Study positions vary based on the position's grade, which is determined by the job description. Pay rates are as follows:

How many hours can Work-Study students work?
Students generally work between 5 to 7 hours per week. Domestic students may not work more than 29 hours per week during the academic year, and international students may not work more than 20 hours during the academic year. The following is the average number of hours students should work per week in order to earn the full amount of their award before the end of the academic year:

If you have questions about students entering the wrong time, contact Miranda Edwards at studentemployment@wlu.edu. If you have questions regarding payment elections and taxes for you student, contact the Business Office.

Can I have Work-Study students during the summer?
You can hire student to work during the summer using your department funds. Please contact Miranda Edwards at studentemployment@wlu.edu for questions about hiring summer students.
When can Work-Study students work?
During the academic year, if the student is eligible to work, they may begin working on the first day of classes and they may work up until graduation day. The only break students cannot work during the academic year is Winter Break. Which means they can work Thanksgiving Holiday Break, Washington Break, and Spring Break.
