GDL Resources
To achieve any endeavor fully and effectively, a collection of resources is essential. The Global Discovery Laboratories have a variety ready for your use in and out of the classroom. These include learning links, technology tips, miscellaneous equipment, and subscription to Mango Languages (an online language learning resource) for W&L students, faculty, and alumni. The Technology and Learning Specialists are employed to serve you in just about any capacity possible. All these are summarized together in the GDL Orientation which we ask users to complete prior to using the laboratories and their services.

Special Projects
The Global Discovery Laboratories is involved with community outreach within our own Rockbridge region as well as at the state and national level. There are seven interesting projects currently under the direction of the GDL. These are Languages for Rockbridge, where W&L Community volunteers teach world languages and cultures to students in local elementary and middle schools; the Foreign Language Teacher Workshop Series (FLTWS) which offers professional development opportunities to world language teachers and professors in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia; Modified Oral Proficiency Interviews (MOPI) in which teachers from the Commonwealth come to two or three-day workshops to learn how to best conduct and assess the interview process at the lower levels of the oral proficiency scale; the Virginia Governor's World Language Academies (VGWLA) for which Washington and Lee University has been host the last eleven years; New Frontiers in Global Education which is a colloquim to be held at W&L to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the realm of education in a world setting; Oral Proficiency Interviews, an assessment tool used in determining an individual's level of comprehension and speaking proficiency in a target language; and Re-Mapping Elections with GIS Technology, a project to research voting strategies, districts, and outcomes in Virginia.

Room Scheduling and Work Orders
Work Orders
Work orders are always best communicated using the form provided through this site; it allows for oversight. Click on the work orders icon; enter the required information; give details if particulars are desired; and submit.
Should you wish to alter your request, return to the work order form as described above and click cancel at the bottom of the page. Doing so will take you to the page listing current work orders. Click on the department name to the left of your instructions, and you will be immediately taken to your work order form for modification. For changes to take place you will have to click close. You may attach a video, audio, or text file to your request using standard procedures for doing so.
Room Scheduling
For faculty and staff wishing to reserve a room, please click on the Room Scheduling icon and you will be taken directly to 25Live which is the central reservation system for the University. You will be notified of your reservation request status within twenty-four hours. Students wishing to use GDL spaces should speak directly with a GDL Technology and Learning Specialist or with Dr. Kuettner.

Testing and Placement Testing
The Global Discovery Laboratories are a testing and assessment center for a wide variety of disciplines on campus. Students are asked to follow established procedures and always adhere to the University Honor System.
