Virginia Governor's World Language Academies
For three weeks of June and July, Washington and Lee University hosts the French, German, and Spanish full-immersion Virginia Governor's World Language Academies. While at the academies, students are required to speak the language of the academy they are attending and are not permitted to speak English. Classes, which are conducted in the target language, are varied, including topics such as film, phonetics, fashion, current events, and a less commonly taught world language. When not in class, students participate in a diverse assortment of cultural activities, which might include sports, theater, dance, yoga, film-making, etc., in order to further their language development. By the end of the academies, the students attain an admirable level of proficiency and will have made a plethora of friends from across the state of Virginia.
