Information for Supporting Your W&L Student May 11, 2023
Family of First-Years (FYs),
We are excited to partner with you in supporting your new student at W&L. College is a time of exploration and growth, and these traits are often developed by navigating a new and unfamiliar experience. Know that we are here to support your student through this process.
We encourage our students to utilize the resources available online and ask questions if they are unable to find answers. Parents can play a key role in this process by encouraging their student to think critically about the questions they may have or things they should be considering. However, it is imperative to allow your student the independence to interact with university personnel, discover their new surroundings and work through various situations on their own until additional assistance is necessary. As a parent, if you have questions, please discuss them with your student first and then have your student contact us while including you in the communication.
You can utilize the internal (my.wlu.edu) FYE website as a resource, especially to review the New Student Onboarding Process, New Student Summer Timeline and the archive of all First-Year Correspondence.
Please ask your student if they have completed the Faculty Adviser Match, Leading Edge Match, and First-Year Housing Match and Agreement that are due by May 31. Additionally, please remind them they can find their student ID# in Workday by clicking on the upper right-hand corner and then "view profile."
We are offering a First-Year Experience (FYE) Open Zoom on Wednesday, May 17 at 9 p.m. EST if students have any questions or just want to chat. You are welcome to join the Zoom as well, but please simply listen and allow your student to vocalize questions if they are able to attend. We encourage students to inform and involve their parents and family, but please allow them to take the lead on their educational experience.
Sincerely,
FYE Team
