Registration Responsibilities

Workday Academics is an application in Workday that allows students to plan future terms, review progress toward meeting graduation requirements, and register for classes. Used together with regular adviser meetings, it is an essential tool for planning an academic schedule.

Registration is the initial process of signing up for courses each term. Consistent with W&L's principle that students bear responsibility for their academic choices and progress, each student selects sections to register into each term. You create a planned schedule in Academics, then when your registration appointment opens, you enroll in your selections or are waitlisted if courses are full. The system checks for open seats and for appropriate qualifications, including adviser registration authorization, prerequisites, instructor consent, time conflicts, etc. Instructor consent can be requested through the "Request Course Section Prerequisite Override" in the Academics worklet.

Reminder - a planned course is not a registered course. Planning is just outlining which courses you want to take, but you must still register for them. Note: be sure to check your account for any holds prior to your registration time.

Drop/add is the process of adjusting your class schedule during the first few days of each term. All degree-seeking students are required to be registered for a full-time load for each term by the end of the drop/add period.

Students with unpaid financial obligations to the University or other administrative holds will not be permitted to register or matriculate for any term of any academic year. More information can be found: https://my.wlu.edu/business-office/parents-and-students

Undergraduate Specific Policies:

All students are expected to give thoughtful consideration to the selection of courses before consulting their faculty adviser. Further, individual students assume full responsibility for compliance with all academic deadlines and requirements.

Students are expected to register for at least 12 credits in the Fall and Winter terms and at least 3 credits in the Spring. An unapproved underload will result in automatic withdrawal from the University after the 2nd week of classes.

Students going on approved study abroad may not register for courses taught at W&L during their time away. As part of the study abroad approval process, they will be registered for two placeholder courses, INTR 298 - Study Abroad Reflections and Assessment and INTR 998: Approved Study Abroad.

Law Specific Policies:

Students must enroll full-time (12 or more credits) per semester (graded) with a maximum of 17 credits. Ungraded externship field-placement credit can be used towards the minimum 12 graded credits.

Policies for 3L Students:

• 3L students may not enroll in any seminar courses until after 2L students register.
• No more than two experiential courses per semester ( practicums, clinics, and externships). If you are enrolled in a clinic or externship you may add one additional practicum, but not a second clinic/externship. During open drop/add (first week of class) if a practicum has an open seat you may request an override to enroll in a third experiential course - please send request to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
• To qualify to declare a course Pass/No Pass you must have at least six graded credits remaining on your schedule - not including the Pass/No Pass course. Ungraded credits such as journals, moot court board/competitions, and externship field placement cannot be used towards these six graded credits.

Policies for 2L Students:

• Must register for Professional Responsibility (LAW 690) in the Spring term (required for graduation).
• May register for one seminar per semester. Once registration is open for everyone a student may register for a second seminar with permission of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
• 2L students must satisfy their upper-level writing requirement during the Fall or Spring semester of their 2L year. This requirement may be satisfied with a journal, seminar, or independent research project. You may find a list of courses that satisfy this requirement online.
• May not enroll in more than one experiential course per semester (practicums, clinics, and externships).
• To qualify to declare a course Pass/No Pass you must have at least 12 graded credits remaining on your schedule - not including the Pass/No Pass course. Ungraded credits such as journals, moot court board/competitions, and externship field placement cannot be used towards these 12 graded credits.
