Curriculum Vitae
Jeff Schatten is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at Washington and Lee University, focusing on the intersection of artificial intelligence, organizational behavior, and leadership. After completing his Ph.D. in Managerial Sciences at Georgia State University in 2016, where he received multiple teaching awards, Jeff has been actively contributing to the discussion on AI's impact on business and society as well as research in negotiations.
Jeff's passion for AI culminated in his forthcoming book, AI Will Take Your Job (and It's for the Best): Embracing the New Social Contract for the Age of AI, set to be published by Emerald Publishing in 2025. The book explores the transformative potential of AI in reshaping work, society, and human potential, offering an optimistic vision for our AI-integrated future.
During a year-long stay in Barcelona while writing this work, Jeff moonlighted as a stand-up comedian, which sometimes even earned him free entry to the show. His research on AI's implications for business has been featured in media outlets such as The Big Story podcast, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The LA Times. Jeff's innovative teaching approach is showcased in his unique "Leading Teams" class, which brings together Washington and Lee students and inmates from a medium-security prison, offering insights into leadership dynamics in challenging environments.
As the creator and host of the management podcast Demystifying Organizations, Jeff has conversed with experts and corporate leaders about a wide range of topics around management and leadership. His academic work, published in journals like Harvard University's Negotiation Journal and Leadership Quarterly, has earned recognition, including the "Best Paper in Organizational Behavior" award from the Southern Management Association.
Jeff's diverse background includes starting a small real estate investment company after the 2008 financial crisis and consulting for a start-up incubator in Cape Town, South Africa. Combining his philosophy background from the University of Maryland with his business expertise, Jeff brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to AI research. His work explores how AI will reshape the future of work, leadership, and human potential. Through teaching and public engagement, Jeff prepares future leaders to navigate and thrive in an AI-integrated world, highlighting both its challenges and unprecedented opportunities.
