Move-In Details August 19, 2024
FYs,
For those not moving in Saturday, some of this message does not apply, but some of the information about street closures, Leading Edge check-in, and parent orientation may still be valuable.
For those moving in Saturday, we look forward to seeing you on campus soon! Printable schedule and maps for move-in day. You may want to print and bring these convenient reference documents.
Lexington will be lively on Saturday with a Community Festival downtown and VMI moving in as well. Please follow our guidance carefully to give you the best experience and avoid unnecessary traffic downtown.
You should know your assigned move-in time from an email you received on July 23. When arriving for move-in, please enter Lexington from the north (I-81 exit 191, I-64 exit 55) on US 11 South. Even if staying in a local hotel - you'll want to still follow these directions as much of downtown will be blocked off. You will drive past VMI and the road will become Jefferson Street. Turn right onto Washington Street and you will soon encounter Public Safety directing you where to go to unload at Graham-Lees on the right or Gaines on the left. Student volunteers will help you unload your car and get your things to your room. As the vehicle is being unloaded, a driver must remain in the driver's seat to move the vehicle to the parking garage as soon as the unload is complete. Public safety will guide the driver to the nearby parking garage where the car can be left during the day.
Your key and University swipe card will be waiting for you in your room, so there is no need to check-in. Packages sent in advance will also be waiting for you in your room. Residence Life will be available at tables in front of your building to help with any questions or needs.
You should receive guidance from your Leading Edge trip leaders about a check-in at 3pm and an optional parent orientation takes place at the same time from 3-5pm in the Lenfest Center.
You are encouraged to leave your car parked until parent orientation ends at 5pm (at which time the downtown streets should be unblocked), but if you need to leave campus before 5pm you should avoid driving downtown by taking Nelson St. west to I-64 or take Nelson St. east, turn right on Jefferson, follow it until it turns left and Ts into Main, turn right on Main and use the bypass to get to the east or north of town.
If you hope to keep a vehicle on campus during the school year, please make sure you register the vehicle before bringing it to campus as parking passes are limited.
Please share this message with your parents and family, and we look forward to your arrival this weekend.
Safe travels and see you soon!
