Stanyslav Aseyev is a well-known Ukrainian journalist and novelist. He was captured by Kremlin-backed separatists in 2017 and held in captivity for 2.5 years for his journalistic work in the conflict zone. While in prison, he witnessed torture and brutalization by the prison staff. He too was abused and tortured. In December 2019, he was released as part of the prisoner exchange between the government of Ukraine and the separatists. After his release, he wrote a book about his experience in prison and he helped to apprehend the head of the prison where he was held. He is the founder of the "Justice Initiative" Foundation for the Search of War Criminals. He continues to speak publicly about his captivity and the Russian Federation's war crimes.
