The process of change in counseling can be like renovating a cherished building. Students are the architect and builder; I am the consultant. The house is made of up experiences, beliefs, values, etc. Maybe some are outdated or have become damaged over time. We work together to assess the structure and plan for change. A renovation can take time, effort, and careful planning that can occasionally involve setbacks, but the result is a stronger and more functional home that serves current needs and aspirations. I prioritize instilling a sense of hope, helping people feel capable, and reducing suffering. This is a rewarding – and often lifechanging – process for both counselor and student.
