Curriculum Vitae
Professor Hooks teaches undergraduate courses in money and banking, principles of macroeconomics, and monetary policy. She has also led a seminar on the European monetary union, which included travel to Europe with students. She conducts research in monetary economics and banking, including the role of banks in economic growth, the impact of regulation on bank risk, and the role of an international lender of last resort.
Professor Hooks' research has been published in professional and general-interest publications, including the Journal of Economic History, Journal of Financial Services Research, Review of Financial Economics, Contemporary Economic Policy, Econ Journal Watch, Credit Research Digest, Virginia Economic Journal, The Group of Thirty monograph series, and Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas publications. For a research sabbatical, Professor Hooks won an AAUW American Fellowship. She acts as an occasional commenter for the press, including the Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, SNL Financial Newsletter, Mortgage Orb, and the Richmond Times.
At W&L, Professor Hooks serves as head of the department of Economics. Other W&L work includes a Presidential Search Committee, Provost Search Committee, Vice-President for Advancement Search Committee, President's Advisory Committee, Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees, Faculty Review Committee, chair of the Academic Support Task Force, faculty advisor to Panhellenic Council, Sorority Housing Committee, the Trustee Alcohol Steering Committee, the Alcohol Task Force, the Faculty Executive Committee, and the Fringe Benefits Committee, and faculty advisor to Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society founded at W&L. For the Williams School of Commerce, she has recently served as chair of the Holistic Faculty Success strategic planning group and chair of the Teaching Evaluation and Development Committee.
Off campus, Professor Hooks serves the profession and community. For Omicron Delta Kappa Society and Foundation, she previously served as national vice president, as chair of the Mission Committee, as member for academe on the Board of Directors, as chair of the National Awards Committee, and is currently a trustee emerita. She is a member of the Regional Advisory Board for Truist Bank and volunteers with the local swim team, her church, and the local secondary schools. She is a past president of the Virginia Association of Economists (VAE).
