The Backpack Program
The Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee (CKWL) began the Weekend Backpack Snack Program in 2009. Our intent is to diminish the meal gap that students eligible for free or reduced lunch experience on weekends. These students receive breakfast and lunch five days a week, but the concern is that they may go hungry over the weekend. Bags are filled with non-perishable breakfast, lunch, and snack items at CKWL by volunteers and delivered in bins to the school on Thursdays. Student participants take their bags home with them to consume over the weekend. The bins are returned to the Campus Kitchen and the cycle repeats. The Backpack Program partners with local schools to serve over 650 children each week.
Volunteer groups are welcome to assist with bag packing and delivery. Contact Ryan Brink for schedule and details.
