Guidelines for Appointments

  • The Dean of the College appoints faculty members to Core or Affiliate roles. Such appointments shall be made in consultation with the faculty member, the program chair, and the faculty member's department chair, as well as with the Williams or Law School dean, when the faculty member is in either of those academic units.
  • "Core" member of an interdisciplinary program replaces the old "Program Advisory" committees.
  • Each program will define what exactly constitutes Core membership, but in every case it should include a regular teaching commitment to the program, scholarly work within the program area, advising within the program, and a service/citizenship commitment to the program. The Core appointments should be regularly reviewed by the Core faculty in a program.
  • "Affiliate" member of an interdisciplinary program designates a faculty member who has an interest in the program and contributes occasionally to its teaching, service, or scholarly work, but who does not make the level of commitment designated for Core faculty in the program.
  • A pre-tenure faculty member may not be appointed as a Core faculty member of more than 1 IP. A tenured faculty member may not be appointed as a Core faculty member of more than 2 IPs.
