Sustainability Leading Edge: Overview and Application process
The Sustainability Leading Edge Trip introduces incoming first-year students to broad principles of sustainability and how they connect to daily issues in our region and on our campus. Importantly, the trip also introduces new students to W&L and life away from home. Trip leaders are guides and mentors for both.
Over the 2025 Spring Term, chosen trip leaders will meet a minimum of twice for in-person planning sessions, and will be invited to provide feedback and suggestions for the six-day program itinerary. Trip leaders will gather on campus again in the days prior to the start of the Leading Edge session in August to finalize details, gather supplies, and bond with each other! (Yes, bonding will be mandatory!). Trip Leader training starts August 21.
During the Leading Edge week from August 24-29, Trip Leaders will help to plan and lead select daytime activities, will plan and lead at least two evening programs, will facilitate program discussions throughout the week, and will participate in all events on the itinerary, facilitating safe and positive participation by all first-year students. While trip leaders will be supported by the staff coordinator, the director of sustainability, and the staff coordinator will be present for all off-campus fieldtrips, they are expected to take initiative and be accountable as leaders.
Current W&L students interested in being a Trip Leader for the 2025 Leading Edge should complete this application form by March 21, 2025. Decisions will be shared by April 7.
