The Department of Romance Languages at Washington and Lee aims to foster in its students an intellectual and vital interest in language itself, to provide its students with the skills and motivation to use the target language in multiple contexts and to promote in its students cultural competence through the examination of literary and non-literary texts, as well as other forms of expression.
About the Department
One of the Foundation and Distribution Requirements (FDR) at Washington and Lee is proficiency in a foreign language (FL). Romance Languages offers coursework towards language proficiency in French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

Romance Languages include Italian and Portuguese, and we are pleased to be able to offer courses in these languages as well as in the cultures that speak them.
Romance Languages encourages all majors to speak with their advisers about participating in our honors program. The process engages you in original research with a faculty member on a topic of interest to you. Once completed, the honors project is an invaluable asset for graduate or professional school, and qualifies you for graduation with honors.
