First-Year Read Discussion The discussion of the first-year reading selection is a key part of your introduction to academic life at W&L. During the summer you will read a book selected by the University that will serve as a common intellectual experience for you and your classmates. During first-year orientation, you will have the opportunity to examine the work in a seminar setting with a faculty or staff volunteer leading the discussion.
House on Mango Street
We look forward to welcoming you to W&L this summer. Every year, we are blown away by our new students and the talents you bring to campus. One of the first events that allows us to celebrate your intellectual diversity and to begin building community is our First-Year reading experience.
This year we have selected House on Mango Street (1984) by Sandra Cisneros as the First-Year read for the class of 2027. During Orientation Week, on September 6 from 1:30 - 2:30 pm, all First-Year students will participate in a faculty or staff led small group discussion of House on Mango Street.
