PE 180: Wilderness Leadership
Course Description
This course is intended to provide students with the opportunity to develop fundamental knowledge and skills for leading and teaching field-base programs. Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary for safe, low-impact backcountry travel.
Course Requirements
Students will be required to instruct subject matter assigned, present a thorough presentation to class and show proficiency in all hard skills taught. Students must also show good judgement, exercise low-impact camping techniques, and demonstrate good leadership. Students will demonstrate these skills and their leadership abilities on a mandatory three-day overnight trip. Prepare for rain or shine, gathering props and necessary equipment prior to class meeting, as all weekday classes will be taught outside in various locations requiring hiking on and off trail up to 5 miles per class without assistance.
