Historically Black Greek Letter Organizations (HBGLOs) provide leadership opportunities and support for students interested in committing to lifelong membership under the National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC). Created in 1930, NPHC serves as the umbrella organization for nine international organizations, also collectively referred to as the Divine Nine. Those nine organizations include:
- Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. - founded Dec. 4, 1906
- Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. - founded Jan. 15, 1908
- Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. - founded Jan. 5, 1911
- Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. - founded Nov. 17, 1911
- Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. - founded Jan. 13, 1913
- Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. - founded Jan. 9, 1914
- Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - founded Jan. 16, 1920
- Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. - founded Nov. 12, 1922
- Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. - founded Sept. 19, 1963
Bolded organizations currently have charters on W&L's campus.
The purpose and mission of the NPHC is to promote "unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider the problems of mutual interest to its member organizations."
W&L's NPHC promotes unity amongst the four HBGLOs on our campus. Currently there are charters for two fraternities: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc,. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and two sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The NPHC encourages good scholarship, participation in fellowship, support for character development, and continued service within the community. Through campus and community partnerships the NPHC and the individual HBGLOs seek to provide awareness and offer educational opportunities that lead to a positive collegiate experience.
For those interested in membership, they will need to follow the individual organization's nationally approved membership intake process. The Membership Intake Process (MIP) is very different than the experience of recruitment through the Interfraternity or Panhellenic system. Please note that the minimum GPA requirement in order to be eligible for MIP varies by organization. Should you be interested in membership in any of the other organizations that make up the NPHC, please contact Heidi Bustos.
