Prospective majors 1) learn fundamental oral presentation skills critically needed for a career in the biosciences; 2) learn to lead a discussion with an emphasis on critical analysis of primary research articles; 3) acquire a conceptual toolbox and theoretical understanding of current neuroscience techniques; 4) develop a digital portfolio of their academic work and research; and 5) learn about current neuroscience lab research opportunities at W&L.

First Year Seminar: A Beginner's Guide to the Brain

In this class, students will be taught how to read and interpret scientific journal articles and how to identify and evaluate experimental hypotheses. Students will be introduced to experimental design, as well as data analysis and interpretation. The class will begin with an overview of scientific literature on the selected topic followed by presentation and discussion of scientific articles. Along with a broad introduction to neuroscience research methods, the students will further develop their critical thinking, analysis, and scientific communication skills. Content and scope will vary by instructor. The course will be both discussion-based and writing intensive.
