Ticket prices, which include taxes and processing fees, are: General Admission, $23; Senior, $18; W&L Faculty/Staff, $13; and W&L students, free with valid student ID. Taxes and processing fees are included in ticket prices.
Praised by The New York Times for "bell-like clarity and surpassing sweetness" and Opera News for "attractive lucidity," Penelope Shumate can be heard as a soloist on professional opera and concert recordings, has performed internationally and throughout the US, including at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in NYC, and is featured on the cover of Classical Singer Magazine.
Her academic service at the university level includes many years of experience teaching voice, lyric diction, voice class, vocal pedagogy, vocal literature, and opera theatre. She holds a DMA in Vocal Performance and serves as a conductor and voice and piano teacher in the Shenandoah Valley.
She will be joined by Lise Keiter, W&L Lecturer in Music, on piano in a program illuminating timeless favorites from the classical and Broadway repertoires, including works by Giacomo Puccini and Jerome Kern. Shumate will also present a masterclass with featured W&L voice students on Friday, October 30, 2026, at 6:00 pm in Wilson Concert Hall.
