Robert de Maria Intern Scholarship

Purpose: To support one or more internships with news organizations. Recently, students have used Robert de Maria scholarships to help with internships at news station WFLA-TV in Tampa, FL, Gannett's Video Production Center in Atlanta, and Fox News in New York City.

Funds available: Amounts awarded to individual interns varies from $500 to $2,000. Total amount each year is usually around $2,000-$3,000.

Eligibility: Declared majors in Journalism or Business Journalism. Interns receiving this stipend must work at least 100 hours in a news operation and enroll in J451, J452 or J453 News Internship. They must also fulfill certain pre-requisites before the internship begins.

How to apply: Address applications to the department head. Include a cover letter and resume.

The Robert de Maria Intern Scholarship is a tribute to Prof. de Maria's genuine affection for his students and for journalism and mass communications in all forms. It was created with leadership gifts from Mr. Shaun R. Levesque '79 and Ms. Tina Vandersteel Cressotti '90 and many former students of Prof. de Maria, who taught at Washington and Lee for 36 years until his retirement in 2013.
