- If confidential letters of recommendation were not required from finalists, references should be contacted before an offer is made.
- Faculty references should be from advisors, faculty mentors or senior colleagues, department chairs, deans, or research collaborators.
- Do not call the candidate's current employer for a reference check without informing the candidate.
- Avoid questions that are non-work related.
- Ask the same basic questions of each reference.
- Reference notes must be saved in the search file.
