Professor Chalmers is a historian of the premodern Middle East and expert in the comparative study of religions. His current research focuses on religious contact and competition through time, with emphasis on the long history of Jews, Samaritan Israelites, Christians, and Muslims (all groups who link their identity to ancient narratives about Abraham).

His courses at W&L bridge antiquity and modernity, and include Race and Ethnicity in the Ancient World, The Fall of Rome, The Dark Ages and Other Myths, The History of Empires in the Middle East, Blasphemy, and Israel: History, Politics, and Society.
