William "Will" Simmerson '17L
Receiving the Knight Fellowship Grant last summer allowed me to pursue my interest in practicing environmental law and helped fund my position as an unpaid intern. With the help of the grant, I was able to work in the Criminal Enforcement Division of the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. In this role, I performed legal research, drafted memoranda, and attended weekly training sessions dealing with the enforcement of various environmental statutes. I worked closely with both attorneys and subject-matter experts who were incredibly passionate about enforcing the EPA's regulations and who sought to deter criminal behavior which could have severely detrimental effects on the environment. Without the generosity of the Knight Fellowship I am not sure I would have been able to accept the position with the EPA and I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity.
