The Knight Fellowship I received as a law student at Washington and Lee for the summer of 2015 supported my internship at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Richmond, Virginia office. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is a regional environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring the Chesapeake Bay and protecting it from further environmental degradation. I worked under Peggy Sanner, Virginia Assistant Director and Senior Attorney, and worked closely with Joe Wood, Virginia Staff Scientist. I worked on water quality issues ranging from land use and agriculture to sewage overflow compliance, though the bulk of my work was related to storm water and involved the Chesapeake Bay TMDL.
My experience at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation was truly comprehensive with respect to state level environmental law. I had a wide variety of experiences, from lobbying boat trips to attending court. It exposed me to almost every portion of state-level legal practice, from litigation to administrative issues to legislative drafting and policy analysis. It was truly a unique, rewarding, and invaluable experience. I am truly grateful to have received a Knight Fellowship that made it possible.
