Program Description
The Program in Environmental Studies, leading to a BA or a minor, teaches students to develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment.
The Environmental Studies major has 6 elective tracks from which to choose:
- Climate Change
- Conservation Biology
- Environmental Economics
- Environmental Humanities
- Sustainable Commerce
- Water Resources
A major could also choose to propose a self-designed track.
Environmental Studies requires an understanding of the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students employ this interdisciplinary approach to develop a comprehensive understanding of the causes, consequences, and solutions to environmental problems.
Our goal is for all of our majors to graduate with:
- an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental issues;
- the research and analytical skills to understand the causes of, consequences of, and solutions to environmental problems;
- the communications skills to share your understanding with a broad audience of stakeholders;
- the desire and the ability to contribute to solving the world's most pressing environmental challenges.
You are encouraged to talk to the Director, Robert Humston, early in your academic career in order to discuss the course of study most appropriate to your interests and career plans. You are also encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator, Debra Frein, to ask any logistical, registration, or curricular questions.
