The Baltimore Sun, 1997-2001: Arts and Entertainment editor. Managed arts coverage.


The Los Angeles Times, 1995-1997: Travel Special Projects Editor, responsible for 10 themed sections a year and two glossy magazines. Wrote numerous travel stories and twice-monthly column of book reviews.


The San Diego Union-Tribune, 1979-1995: Assistant Features Editor, Features Editor, Assistant Managing Editor/Features. As AME/Features supervised staff of 50-60, and 10 feature sections. From 1992-1994, conceived, led and edited projects which resulted in 11 Pulitzer Prize nominations.


The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, 1975-1979: Copy Editor, News Editor.


The Riverside Press-Enterprise, 1970-1975: News Editor, Assistant City Editor, Music Columnist.

Travel Writing

  • Winner, Society of American Travel Writers 1994 silver medal for best newspaper story, foreign travel.
  • Named best travel writer (newspapers) 1993 by Pacific Asian Travel Association.
  • Published freelance travel articles in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun, Orlando Sentinel, Seattle Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Philadelphia Inquirer, Detroit Free-Press, and many other newspapers.
