Logos and Wordmarks
W&L's logos and wordmarks are visual representations of our brand and are common elements across all of the university's communications. It is essential that they be used consistently across all media.
The Wordmark
The Washington and Lee University Wordmark, which is available in blue and black, should be reproduced only from original artwork. Attempts to create the Wordmark using fonts available on personal computers will not successfully create the original Wordmark. The Wordmark should never be displayed at an angle, and sufficient space should be allowed around it so that it stands out clearly on the page.
The W&L Law School Logo
The W&L Law logo, which is available in blue and black, should be reproduced only from original artwork. The Law logo should never be displayed at an angle, and sufficient space should be allowed around it so that it stands out clearly on the page.
The Symbol
The W&L Symbol is designed for informal use when a logo may be appropriate as a design element. In some instances, the W&L Symbol may be used in combination with the Wordmark. As in the case of the Wordmark, the W&L Symbol has been developed with specific spacing and sizes and should not be recreated on personal computers. In certain instances, and with approval from the Office of Communications, the symbol may be used without the oval.
The Trident
The Trident is the University's primary athletics symbol. Originally designed as the monogram letter used for varsity athletes, the Trident should be used as a stand-alone symbol and should not be used to create new logos in which it is one element. It remains primarily the Athletics symbol but is also used by the Alumni Association.
The Trident should not be altered in any way, including the addition of type to the logo itself, and should always be printed in either the official University blue or black or reversed out of either the University blue or black. The Trident should have a safe zone of at least a one-quarter of an inch on all sides.
The W&L Crest
The W&L Crest is limited to formal usage, such as invitations and internal decorative applications. It should not be used in combination with the Wordmark or other university symbols and is not used on stationery, business cards, websites, or brochures. It should always be printed in four colors at the highest possible reproduction.
The Seal
The Seal is only used by the University Registrar on official documents.
