CLAS/ARTH 295 – Landscapes and Monuments of Ancient Greece

Four credits, FDR HA; EXP
One week on campus, three weeks in Greece
Professors Michael Laughy (Classics) and Ellen Archie (Art History)

Travel across four millennia of Greek history-from the Bronze Age cities of the heroes of Homer to Classical Athens and Venetian Crete-while uncovering the art, architecture, and stories that shaped the ancient Mediterranean. Visiting sites from the Bronze Age, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Venetian periods, students investigate how each reflects major historical, artistic, and architectural developments. Through readings, lectures, site visits, and hands-on activities, they gain the skills to trace key historical narratives, recognize central themes in art and architecture, and interpret a wide range of material evidence, from pottery and sculpture to inscriptions and monumental remains.
