SPAN 213 – Seville and the Foundations of Spanish Civilization
Four credits, FDR-HU, EXP
Four weeks in Seville, Spain
Professor Matthew Bailey (Tucker Hall 302)
This course takes place in Seville, Spain, a privileged location that provides the inspiration and the cultural landscape for the study of foundational Spain. We examine the period of vibrant and sometimes conflictive cultural exchange among Muslims, Jews, and Christians in Spain and the subsequent emergence of Christian hegemony and Empire. Significant cultural currents are examined through texts (literary, historical and religious), the study of art and architecture, and by direct contact through visits to cathedrals, mosques, synagogues, museums and other sites of cultural significance in Seville, Madrid, El Escorial, Toledo, Córdoba and Granada. Students speak Spanish exclusively while experiencing contemporary culture through homestays, a guided wine tasting, a professional cooking class, and two Sevillanas dance classes in preparation for the Feria de Abril, the local week-long festivity that takes place during our stay. The course is divided into two parts: a text-based reading component with Prof. Bailey and an Art History component with a local professor who also leads the excursions outside of Seville as well as to cultural sites of interest in Seville. These include the Cathedral, Hospital de la Caridad, Museo de Bellas Artes, Barrio de Santa Cruz (the former Jewish Quarter), and Itálica, the first Roman city on the Iberian Peninsula and the birthplace of emperors Trajan and Hadrian.
Prerequisites are SPAN 162, 164 or equivalent (200-level placement).
