Span 201 – Supervised Study Abroad in Costa Rica
Four credits, EXP
Four weeks in Costa Rica
Professor Aroldo Nery Mora
Students spend four weeks in Nicoya, Costa Rica -- the cultural capital of the Guanacaste province, situated between the Pacific to the west, mountains to the east, and the Nicaraguan border to the north. SPAN 201 is designed to improve grammar and vocabulary of the Intermediate to Advanced student through intensive language training, including full immersion practices, a Spanish-only policy, an individual home-stay with a Costa Rican family, extended hours of tailored tutoring, and close instruction (only two fellow students per instructor). The cultural component includes readings and visits to sites of cultural interest, such as excursions to Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal volcano, Palo Verde
National Park, Guaitil, and Sámara beach, among others.
Students meet five days per week for four hours daily for language instruction (two students per instructor) and also spend approximately five hours each week as a volunteer in one of the community-based service-learning experiences at the local school, long-term care facility, or other community agencies.
Eligibility and Pre-requisites: All students must have completed SPAN 162, 164, or its placement test equivalent. SPAN 201 is an ideal course for those who wish to continue their intermediate language development as well as those who are contemplating continuing with more advanced course at the 200 level. SPAN 201 counts toward the major as one of the five required 200 level courses. In order for the Academia to tailor your individual learning plan, you will be asked to complete a preliminary placement test during Winter-term orientation.
