SPAN 213 – Seville and the Foundations of Spanish Civilization

Four credits (FDR HU, EXP, GL)
Four weeks in Sevilla, Spain
Professor Jeff Barnett

This course takes place in Seville, Spain, a privileged location that provides the inspiration and the cultural landscape for the study of foundational Spain. We examine the period of co-existence among Muslims, Jews, and Christians before exploring the emergence of Christian hegemony and Empire. Significant cultural currents are examined through texts (literary, historical and religious), the study of art and architecture, and by direct contact through visits to museums, cathedrals, and other sites of cultural significance in Seville, Madrid, El Escorial, Toledo, Córdoba and Granada. Students speak Spanish exclusively while experiencing contemporary culture through homestays, guided tasting of traditional and contemporary 'tapas' and wines, market shopping, and a cooking class.

Pre-requisites are SPAN 162, 164 or equivalent (200-level placement).

Program fee (Paid to W&L): $3,720
Includes programming, room, most meals, fees.

Additional costs: airfare, train from Madrid to Sevilla, ground transportation, books, a few lunches, cell phone, spending money, COVID-19 testing, passport, and visa fees (if applicable)
