ROML 297 – Walking the Portuguese Caminho de Santiago

Four credits, EXP, GL, HU
One week on campus; Three weeks in portugal
Professors Matthew Bailey and Jeff Barnett

Students study the Portuguese route to Santiago (Sant Iago) de Compostela and the cultural history of the Camino de Santiago and then walk the 144-mile (232-kilometer) route from Porto to Santiago, to the shrine of St. James the Greater, apostle of Christ. The first week is spent on campus studying the cultural history of the route, modern concepts of pilgrimage, and the Portuguese language. Students choose individual study projects related to the towns and cities along the route and begin our communal digital mapping. The pilgrimage is divided into twelve stages, averaging a demanding 12 miles per day. The trip also includes two nights in Porto, a rest day in Tuy, and three nights in Santiago de Compostela. (HU).
