MATH/MUS 260 – Statistics in Music

Four credits, FDR FM
Four weeks in South Korea
Professors Sybil Prince Nelson and Terry Vosbein

During the four weeks in Korea, we will explore Korean history and music through lectures and tours. We will learn the instruments and tuning systems of Korea and collect music files to analyze the note frequencies and analyze their adherence to the Benford distribution. The course will also examine the influences of Western music on Korean music and study specifically the music of K-pop which has been shown to be very Benford distributed.

A one-credit course given during Winter 2024 will be spent learning basic Korean, the Benford distribution, how to collect and convert music files and how to write code in the statistical program R.

This course will be an immersion in the Korean culture, students will expand up their knowledge of Korean learned during the Winter course and will be able to practice reading hangeul, order food, navigate transportation, and interpret traditional Korean music.
