POL 287 – The Maghreb: History, Culture, and Politics

This interdisciplinary course examines the history, culture, and politics of the Maghreb region of North Africa. It takes place in Lexington and Morocco. Topics include the influence of religion on politics, the past and present effects of colonialism, contemporary developments like responses to the ‘Arab Spring,' and more. As part of this class, students will visit three of Morocco's four imperial cities and will engage with Arab scholars, students, civil servants, and political analysts. Site visits include the world's oldest tannery and Africa's largest mosque, among many others.
Program fee (Paid to W&L): $3,898
Includes programming, airfare, room, breakfast and lunch while abroad, fees, in-country transportation, and transportation to the airport from W&L.
Additional costs: books, dinners while abroad, cell phone, spending money, COVID-19 testing, passport, and visa fees (if applicable)
