ENGN 125: Engineering Marvels

(4 credits)

2 weeks on campus, 2 weeks in England

Prof. Kacie D'Alessandro

Engineering has evolved over the years as technology and society has advanced. This course will investigate technical engineering concepts, the evolution of engineering, and the historical and cultural significance of engineering through the study of ancient and modern engineering marvels around the world. A framework of basic engineering analysis and historical context will be explored for the marvels before travel, and site visits and tours will take place abroad to explore these marvels firsthand.

More specifically, this term will focus on engineering marvels of England. Based in London, we will explore many sites, including bridges along the River Thames, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the London Eye and the London Underground. Day trips to Windsor Castle and Land Rover will take us outside of London.

Program Fee (paid to W&L):  $2,485. This includes accommodations (in double rooms at a modern residence hall with internet and kitchen facilities); site visits, transportation pass, a cultural event and farewell dinner.

Estimated Other Expenses:  Airfare - $1,500; ground travel - $100; meals - $1,000; cell phone (sim card or international phone) $50; other souvenirs, tours, etc. - $100
