ARTS 372: Photography and the City of Paris France

ARTS 223 (4 credits)

4 weeks in Paris, France

Professor Christa Bowden

The city of Paris plays a critical role in the history of photography, from the invention of the daguerreotype in 1839, to the documentation of a city in transition by Atget and Marville, to the "decisive moments" of Cartier-Bresson, to the contemporary art scene of today. With these historical contexts in mind, students will explore the city with their cameras, and create a body of related images based on visual research of an aspect of the city. Gallery and museum visits will also play a large role in this course.

This course will be taught in collaboration with HIST 210-Paris, the Contested City and there will be a number of group activities and collaborative assignments. Students will also be housed in the same dormitory building in Paris, and will have the same travel dates as HIST 210.

Prerequisite: ARTS 120 Photography I must be taken by fall term 2014. A 1-credit prep course will also be required during winter term 2015.

Program Fee (paid to W&L): $3,250. This fee includes housing, two dinners, transportation within Paris, museum admissions and other activities for class.
