The course examines the representation of Rome and the Italian cinematic city, a crucial element to fully understanding Italian cinema and society, from 1945 to present time. Readings, discussions and excursions provide an understanding of the contrast between ancient and modern that characterizes Italian postwar urbanization. The course investigates aspects of contemporary Italian society and life, the massive modernization first brought by the economic miracle and then by tourism and globalization. Students will become familiar with films that prominently feature Roman landmarks and streetscapes. We will use English as the basis for discussions, oral presentations and directed writing exercises. However, special attention will be devoted to some key expressions in Italian, dialects, body language as well as other aspects of Italian culture.

Program Dates: April 21-27 on campus; April 28-May 17 in Rome.

Program fee (payable to the University): $4,120. This includes accommodation (with breakfast), airport transfer from the Rome airport to the IES Abroad Center, activities and field trips, three dinners per week in the residence, farewell group dinner, local transportation passes, and supplementary health insurance.
