4 Credits

4 weeks in Paris, France

Professors Sarah Horowitz and Katie Chenoweth

This course spends four weeks in Paris analyzing the city as a dense and multilayered "text." How do we read the space of a city? How are urban spaces written and rewritten over time-inscribed with signs of memory, meaning, and history? And what if a city's history is erased, forgotten, or rendered illegible? Through daily readings, site visits, film screenings, and onsite projects, we examine how contemporary Paris manifests its complex history from Roman colonization to the present. Topics studied include memory, space, the flâneur, power, violence, universalism, and tourism. Students may take the course for credit in either History or French.

Prerequisite for credit in French: FREN 261 or instructor consent.
