An introduction to the complex literary world of Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), one of the most influential writers of all time, focusing on some of his most representative short stories, as well as essays and poetry. Additionally, the class will watch, discuss and analyze movies relevant to Borges's work. Readings and class discussions will highlight some of the most important thematic aspects of Borges's ouevre, such as the labyrinth, the double, and the gaucho, as well as his use of literary genres like the fantastic, the detective genre, and the short story-essay, a narrative genre whose emergence can be credited to Borges himself.
Through Borges's work and visits to sites of historical and cultural interest, students will also learn about Argentina, its people and civilization. Visits include three days in Buenos Aires, and a weekend visiting the impressive canyons of the National Park of Talampaya and the strange soil formations of Valle de la Luna. The course includes a daily Spanish language class emphasizing the four linguistic skills--listening, speaking, reading, and writing--home stays, and tango lessons.

Prerequisite: One 200-level Spanish course and instructor consent. Fulfills the FDR HL.

Program Fee (paid to W&L): $3,450. This includes accommodation and 3 meals a day in Córdoba, trip to Buenos Aires (including room and board with all meals), cultural visits and activities, guest lectures, supplementary health insurance, and International Student Identity Card (ISIC).
