Part-time or Adjunct Faculty

Part-time or adjunct faculty are those individuals hired to teach in a classroom instructional capacity at any load less than full-time and for a temporary duration. These individuals are hired for their individual expertise to instruct in content-specific areas in which they are professionally credentialed and/or qualified.

Full-time faculty who are assigned a full-time administrative role, have rank and tenure, and teach an occasional course are classified according to their administrative responsibilities.

As indicated in the Faculty Handbook:

Non-tenure track faculty are an essential part of the Washington and Lee community. Like their tenured and tenure-track counterparts, non-tenure track faculty are effective and dedicated teachers who are often experts in their field, and who not only contribute to the curriculum at every level and department at the University, but also enrich the overall intellectual community.
