W&L invests heavily in student research, whether independent or in partnership with faculty. Opportunities abound for work in the natural sciences and the humanities, and students are encouraged to take part in the University's semi-annual Science, Society and the Arts research conference.
Student Opportunities
Washington and Lee's Shepherd Program for the Interdisciplinary Study of Poverty and Human Capability fosters learning through service and reflection. By becoming involved directly in what can be done to foster human capabilities for communities and individuals who have been left behind, the program promotes a structure for student leadership and volunteer service on our campus, in the local Rockbridge community and in communities across the nation and internationally.
Students interested in exploring undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities beyond Lexington have access to our University-wide database of grants, fellowships, research, internship and study abroad opportunities.
International experience is viewed as an important part of a comprehensive Washington and Lee education. The purpose of study abroad is to further one's knowledge of the world and its cultures and to expand the opportunities and arenas for academic inquiry. W&L offers a range of study abroad options supported by the resources necessary to ensure a suitable international experience for any student. The University also offers a Certificate in International Immersion for students who show a significant commitment to and understanding of global interaction.
