The Chavis House is named for Washington and Lee University's first African-American student, Reverend John Chavis. Reverend Chavis completed his studies at Liberty Hall (former name of W&L) in 1799. The Chavis House is considered open University space and is a central congregating point for many in the African-American and Black campus community. In addition to providing student housing, the Chavis House provides a physical space on campus where African-American and Black (and other ethnic/racial minority) cultures and traditions are actively appreciated. The Chavis House includes a living room, large dining area, sun-room, and open kitchen which are all great community spaces for organizational meetings, programming, and dialogue. The house is located at 10 Lee Avenue, which is within great proximity to main campus, campus services (such as registrar, mailroom, and student health), and downtown Lexington.
