Upper-Division Housing Selection Overview

Washington and Lee University requires three years of on-campus residency. Returning students select their room and roommate(s) during spring term for the following academic year (2023-2024) through the housing lottery & selection process. Prior to the housing lottery, each student must register online via eRezLife by completing the “RETURNING STUDENTS – Fall 2023 Housing Agreement.” The agreement must be completed by April 3, 2023 in order to participate in housing selection. The procedural fairness of the lottery is ensured through a random selection process in which students receive computer-generated timeslots. Priority is determined by each student's class year as follows:

• Rising junior (first priority): students whose anticipated graduation date is before June 1, 2025
• Rising sophomore (second priority): students whose anticipated graduation date is before June 1, 2026
• Rising senior: students whose anticipated graduation date is before June 1, 2024

Students should check the web directory to confirm their class year is consistent with university designation.

Study Abroad

Students participating in fall study abroad are NOT eligible to participate in housing lottery/selection. Fall study abroad students who return to campus winter 2024 will have a separate application process during fall term. Students who plan to be on campus for fall 2023, but abroad for winter 2024 must participate in the upcoming lottery/selection. For more information visit the Study Abroad FAQs website.

The Village Apartment/Townhouse Selection:

1. Each apartment has 4 single bedrooms. Each townhouse has 6 single bedrooms with the exception of Townhouse O3 which has 7 single bedrooms. The number of individuals in a roommate group MUST match the number of beds in a Village apartment or townhouse in order to be selected. If your group is one less, or one over, you will not be able to select the unit.

2. During the lottery, the person in the group with the earliest (best) timeslot will login to go.wlu.edu/erezlife during his/her designated time to select a unit and assign roommates to beds. TIP: you can let eRezLife assign the beds in a unit at random and change the bedroom assignments later – just focus on selecting the apartment or townhouse. Each roommate will receive an email notification and login to accept the request. If a roommate does not accept a request within the given time, the unit is no longer filled, and the system will release the unit reservation. This means the group will need to start the process over, so BE PREPARED and IN TOUCH with your roommate groups!

3. Groups of rising juniors will receive priority timeslots. Intentions to live with all juniors in a unit will provide the greatest opportunity to live in your unit of choice because juniors receive priority selection the first two days. NOTE: There are typically ~300 Village beds available at selection. Not all rising juniors will secure a Village bed space – those who do not will need to select from Woods Creek or Theme Housing.

4. Timeslots are randomly assigned by eRezLife based on class year. You can review class year priority by clicking here.

Woods Creek Apartment Selection:

1. Each apartment has 3-4 single bedrooms or 3 single bedrooms and 1 double bedroom. See floor plans here. A group is not required to fill the unit to capacity to reserve it during the lottery, but an unfilled unit may result in random housing assignments. For vacant beds in double rooms, only students who match the gender of the person currently assigned may select the vacant bed.

2. During the lottery, the person in the group with the earliest (best) timeslot will login during their designated time to select a unit and request roommates and bed assignments to fill the unit. Each roommate will receive an email notification and must login to eRezLife to accept the request. If a roommate does not accept a request and the unit is no longer filled, the unfilled beds will be available to others.

3. Groups of rising juniors will receive priority timeslots. Intentions to live with all juniors will provide the greatest opportunity to live in your unit of choice. Rising sophomores may receive a spot at the Village, but will most likely be assigned to Woods Creek, followed by theme housing. You can view the room selection timeline/chart by clicking here.

Theme House Selection:

1. The application/selection process takes place prior to the upper-division housing lottery/selection. View our website for more information on the theme house application/selection process.

2.  Theme house applicants must complete the “RETURNING STUDENT – Fall 2023 Housing Agreement” AND the Theme House Application via eRezLife.

3. Students who accept their theme house offering are bound to the room they select and are not eligible to participate in the lottery/selection process.

4. All rising sophomores and juniors who decline their theme house offering must participate in the lottery/selection process.

5. Any theme house rooms that are vacant at the end of the theme house process may be randomly assigned and/or made available during the housing lottery/selection process.

Fraternity & Sorority House Selection:

1. Fraternity/sorority room selection is determined by individual chapters prior to the lottery; however, ALL students who are assigned to fraternity/sorority housing MUST complete the “RETURNING STUDENTS – Fall 2023 Housing Agreement” via eRezLife.

2. Each fraternity/sorority house must be filled to capacity. Rising sophomore and junior placements must take priority over senior placements.

3. If a chapter fails to fill the house, Student Affairs reserves the right to randomly assign chapter members until the house is filled. Otherwise, the chapter may be responsible for covering the cost of unfilled beds.

4. Students who are assigned to fraternity/sorority houses are not eligible to participate in the lottery.
