2022 Fall Term Advising Advice II

Dear Colleagues,

We are now in the second year of our summer registration system. Twelve of your colleagues, along with me, Fred, Elizabeth, Jason, and Kim, among others, worked over the summer to help incoming FY students develop their fall term schedule.

We want to make sure the handoff to you, our initial advisers, goes more smoothly this year. In the next week, you will receive your new initial advisees' names and contact information. Your advisees, in turn, will receive their schedules. Some will reach out to their summer registration advisers with questions, but the summer registration advisers will advise them to reach out to you. This is handoff time.

When you get your list of advisees, it is important that you reach out to them individually and, if possible, meet with them ahead of the semester to put their minds at ease. Beyond that first outreach, September 6, from 1-3:30 PM, has been set aside for your first face-to-face meeting with your advisees.

Some things that might help with that first meeting:

Please review this guide to holistic advising we developed as a faculty last year at Fall Academy. It contains some great tips on building a holistic relationship with your advisee. Keep in mind, however, that we have a Fall Academy session for advisers on August 30 (please consider attending and bring a friend!) where we may make some tweaks.

In Workday, the "Advising" worklet (either under "quick tasks" or click "view all apps") is where you can see all of your advisees. You can see more information on your students, such as current class schedules and academic history.

There are also two ways to see course offerings should you need to advise on course selections during the drop/add period:

    1. The advising worklet is also where you will find a link to the "Find Course Sections for Registration" report. It is preset for Fall 2022.
    2. Or click this link https://wlu.app.box.com/s/qpjwwznn1yvz43dkt9zmdvty25gg9asy which we will update periodically.

Workday resources for students and faculty can be found on the Workday Student Training Resources page. Most importantly, there are instructions on removing adviser holds, so FYs may change their schedules beginning on September 7.

Please also note that there will be a registration help desk on Wednesday, September 7, from 9-11 AM in Elrod Commons 206, where FYs can adjust their schedules.

Finally, there are two significant policy changes we as a faculty approved last year. Please review these as they mark a departure from previous practices, especially during COVID.

As usual, if you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me.
