In August 2018, President Dudley announced the creation of a new position for a Director of Institutional History at Washington and Lee. Following a national search, Dr. Lynn Rainville was named the inaugural director of institutional history in March 2019. She began work on July 1.
In August 2018, President Dudley issued his response to the report of the Commission on Institutional History and Community, which he appointed to lead W&L students, faculty, staff and alumni in an examination of how our history — and the ways that we teach, discuss and represent it — shapes our community. The Board of Trustees and President Dudley announced several decisions related to the recommendations of the Commission in October 2018.
Members of the faculty, staff, administration and student body were empaneled in August 2013 to examine the history of African Americans at the university and to create a timeline of that history.
