Matthew Chalmers Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion
Tucker Hall 208
Matthew Chalmers (Ph.D. UPenn 2019) teaches courses on the Bible, bodies in Judaism, and antisemitism past and present. His scholarship and teaching focuses on identity, difference, and contested pasts, with emphasis on Late Antiquity (200-750CE) and on the long history of Samaritans, an ethnoreligious minority in present-day Israel/Palestine. Dr. Chalmers' current work explores claims of identity and difference in ancient Jewish, Christian, and Samaritan texts from what is now the Middle East and North Africa. It renovates our understanding of pre-modern Judaism and Christianity while simultaneously making visible for adjustment (and critique) how habits of racialization, ethnicization, politicization, and classification shape interpretation of our shared pasts.
