Bryant S. Kendrick Memorial Outdoors Fund Award and CET Summer Study Abroad in Shanghai Program
After spending a week hiking in the canyons of Bears Ears National Monument through the support of the Kendrick Grant, I spent the remainder of my summer studying abroad in Shanghai. Through the CET Shanghai academic program, I was able to further my progress towards my Chinese double major alongside interning at a startup environmental firm, Upbeing. We focused on promoting sustainability and protection of the environment through community project based learning events. I worked alongside Chinese college students teaching younger students about ways to build using Eco-Bricks, how to navigate using only a compass, and the fundamentals of geology through the melting and cooling of crayons. The experience allowed me to improve my Chinese abilities while promoting sustainability in a place that greatly needs change. As soon as I returned home, I headed back to Lexington to once again lead an App Adventure trip.
