Working for the Outing Club
This summer I stayed in Lexington and worked for the Outing Club under James Dick. This involved many day-to-day tasks such as maintaining the Outing Club Barn and processing regular equipment rentals, as well as the many summer projects that the Outing Club does during the summer. These included several family programs for staff and alumni in addition to barn renovations and taking inventory in preparation for App Adventure in late August.
Most of my work this summer, however, was focused on the development of the bike program at W&L, most importantly the development of the new University Bike Shop, which opened at the start of September. Our old shop was located in the Outing Club Barn, and was unable to keep up with the needs of the expanding program. I was one of many people involved in moving a huge number of bikes, parts and tools to the Sustainability House basement and setting up our new shop there. I also took a weekend to travel to Asheville with Rolf Piranian in order to attend a bike repair class to have official mechanic training.
