Study Abroad Opportunities in Geology
Washington and Lee Geology majors have an extensive number of opportunities for studying abroad.
Geology Spring Term Abroad
The Geology Department usually offers a spring term international experience through our GEOL 373 Regional Geology course. These are field-based excursions to spectacular geologic locales. Recent trips have gone to the New Zealand and Iceland. In the Spring of 2020 the class will be going to Greece.
Off-campus Study Abroad
W&L geology majors also have many study abroad opportunities at other institutions for a semester. Sometimes students take courses that satisfy foundation and distribution requirements at W&L, but students have also taken courses that transfer in as geology majors classes. In these cases students either have very good command of the language in the host country or have gone to English-speaking countries to take geology courses, such as New Zealand, Australia or the UK. More information on study abroad opportunities at other institutions can be found at the Center for International Education. Note, when decided to go abroad for a semester, students should look at the long-term schedule here in geology at W&L to make sure and coordinate between when courses will be offered here, and when they plan to be abroad.
Undergraduate Research Abroad
In addition, some professors in the department have research projects overseas. Students in the past have had the opportunity to study the health of staghorn coral in Belize, tectonics in the Swiss Alps, growth strata in Spain, and river incision in the Andes.
