GEOL 105 Earth Lab: Coral Reefs: Past, Present, and Future 2014

The goal of this field and laboratory course is to introduce you to the geology, ecology, chemistry, and biology of coral reefs and associated carbonate systems, and to investigate the reasons for recent worldwide decline of coral reefs. A complementary goal of this course is to explore reef systems through real science via primary scientific literature and your own scientific investigations. Field exercises will focus on identification, description, and interpretation of carbonate systems and marine zonation with a focus on coral reef ecosystems. Your final research project will take place on a patch reef composed of an extraordinarily high concentration of an endangered coral species.
